Challah hot from the oven is the main draw here: time it right and you get one the minute it comes out. Home bakers will find wholemeal spelt flour on the shelves that turns up almost nowhere else on the island, alongside semolina and filo pastry.

The chocolate babka is the proof: the sweetness measured exactly, never overdone. You order ahead for Friday, and some weeks the orders close — best to be early.
